Bedminster NJ is known as horse country and for good reason! Horse farms make up most of Bedminster’s 27 square miles. Dutch, German, Scottish and Irish immigrants settled here in 1710 and Bedminster Township was created by royal charter on April 4, 1749.
“The Somerset Hills” consist of Bedminster Township and several neighboring Somerset County towns – Bernards Township (comprised of Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner and Lyons), Bernardsville, Far Hills and Peapack-Gladstone. At one point, Bedminster’s roster of residents read like the Social Register cross-indexed to a textbook of American economic history. Names like Forbes, DeLorean, Engelhard and Onassis were once on local deeds. More recently, former New Jersey Governors Christine Todd Whitman and Thomas Kean, as well as King Hassan II of Morocco live or lived in the area.
Over the years, many of Bedminster’s large farms have been preserved. A long court battle in the 1980s resulted in development of more affordable housing on smaller lots called “The Hills.” Initially restricted to Bedminster, The Hills now also covers part of Basking Ridge, climbing up both sides of Schley Mountain.

As a result of development on these smaller lots, home types range from 1 bedroom condos to 5 bedroom single family homes. Many owners choose to rent out their homes as income properties.
